Adyen debuts two flexible-use terminals

The news: Adyen launched two point-of-sale (POS) terminals ahead of the holiday season, per a press release.

  • S1E4 Pro. This spill- and dust-proof handheld POS terminal is designed to weather fast-paced, high volume restaurants, bars, and event venues.
  • S1F4 Pro. Transitioning seamlessly from countertop terminal to mobile terminal when undocked, users can take advantage of the built-in printer and full connectivity range to boost functionality.

Why this matters: Payment providers’ POS sales are struggling—and competition has never been greater.

  • Fiserv’s Clover underperformance contributed to sluggish Q3 earnings.
  • Toast reported hardware sales were down YoY in its Q3 earnings.
  • Square’s hardware sales also lagged YoY.

Amid economic uncertainty, small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) may try to save on terminal costs by turning to mPOS solutions as they feel the squeeze from tariffs

Our take: As SMBs approach the critical holiday season, POS providers need to offer value to court cash-strapped vendors, reminding them the importance of a reliable, durable terminal system.

Add-ons like AI-powered software can help convince vendors the value of their hardware with high-powered tools to boost conversions and payment volume.
