Credit card surcharges are becoming commonplace among small businesses

The news: About one-third (34%) of US small businesses add surcharges to credit card transactions, per a J.D. Power survey fielded between August and October 2024.

Why this matters: Surcharges are a point of tension between merchants and their customers. Merchant satisfaction rates were 24 points lower (on a 1,000-point scale) for businesses that added surcharges, per the survey.
