Disney+ and Hulu introduce perks programs to deter cancellations

The news: Walt Disney Co. is rolling out perks programs for Disney+ and Hulu subscribers, designed to boost its competitive edge in streaming.

  • The new program gives new and existing subscribers access to perks including free video game items, a $10 credit for NFT platform Disney Pinnacle, and discounts at Disney resorts.
  • US subscribers will also have the ability to attend Disney movie premieres like the upcoming “Freakier Friday” and enter contests for a Disney cruise. Users can also receive discounts and free trials with partners like Duolingo and DoorDash. The perks program will be rolled out to international audiences later this year.
  • Disney is also debuting a perks program for Hulu, which includes offers like the opportunity to win tickets to “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Lollapalooza, and Comic-Con.
  • Customers subscribing to bundles for both streaming services can access all perks.

Zooming out: The changes come as part of Disney’s broader effort to draw in new and retain existing subscribers to Disney+ and Hulu while increasing revenues per user. The flagship streaming service’s fiscal Q1 generated higher-than-expected revenues, but saw a dip in subscribers, though Q2 saw a slight increase in subscribers for both Disney+ and Hulu.
